How to use Bill splitter
Add your file
Drop your JSON file onto the upload area, or tap the area to choose it from your device.
Set the options
Choose Search splits, Currency, Add a person's name, Paid by, Paid by (exp amt) and Split. Every setting is on screen before you add a file, so you can see what the tool will do before it runs.
Run it and save
Press Add expense, Don →. The button stays disabled until there is something to work on, and each file shows its own progress and result. Press Save (JSON). Each finished file keeps a name based on the one you started with, so you can tell the versions apart.
What this tool does
Multiple groups in a notepad-style sidebar
Every group is its own split in the sidebar, so a holiday, a flatshare and a dinner stay apart, and the search box filters the list when there are a lot of them.
Split equally, by amounts, percentages or shares
Split covers Equally, Exact amounts, Percentages and Shares, chosen per expense, so one dinner can be split evenly and the rent by share.
Record settle-up payments
Record a payment from one person to another and it comes off the balances, so the list shows what is still outstanding rather than the original totals.
See who owes whom with the fewest payments
The settle-up view works out the smallest set of payments that clears everyone, instead of everybody paying everybody.
Saves in your browser, export and import JSON
Everything is saved in this browser on this device. Save (JSON) writes a backup file, and Import brings it back or merges it into what is already there.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my data saved, and is it private?
Only in this browser on your device, using local storage, like a notepad. Nothing is uploaded, so your splits stay private and are there when you return. Clearing your browser cache or site data will remove them, so use Save for a backup.
What split methods can I use?
Equally, by exact amounts, by percentages, or by shares. Choose the method when adding an expense and enter each person's part. The tool warns you if percentages do not add up to 100 or exact amounts do not match the total.
What does Settle up do?
It records a payment from one person to another, which updates the balances. Use it when someone actually pays back what they owe, so the figures stay accurate over time.
Can I keep several groups and back them up?
Yes. Use the plus button to add as many splits as you like and switch between them in the sidebar. Save downloads everything as a JSON backup, and Import loads it again, replacing or merging, to move between devices.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The layout adjusts to small screens, with the splits list above and the active split below, and the forms stack so you can add people and expenses comfortably on mobile.
