Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = total quality points รท total credit hours. Quality points = grade points ร— credit hours for each course. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 quality points; a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = 12 quality points. Add up all quality points, divide by total credits, and you have your GPA.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses โ€” often on a 5.0 scale where an A in an AP class = 5.0. High schools typically calculate both. College admissions offices may recalculate unweighted GPA to compare fairly across schools.

What GPA do I need for graduate school?

Requirements vary widely. Most graduate programs want 3.0 minimum; competitive programs (top MBA, law, medical school) typically want 3.5+. Some programs emphasize GPA in your major over cumulative GPA. Research the specific programs you're applying to for their actual requirements.

Can I raise my GPA significantly in one semester?

Yes, especially with more credits remaining. With 60 credits at a 2.8 GPA, earning a 4.0 in 30 more credits brings you to about a 3.2. The more credits remaining, the more room for improvement. Use the "What GPA do I need?" tool above to see exactly what average is required.

What does a 3.0 GPA letter grade correspond to?

A 3.0 GPA = B average. A 3.5 = B+/Aโˆ’ average. A 3.7 = Aโˆ’. A 4.0 = straight A's. Below 2.0 is generally considered academic probation territory at most universities.
