Frequently asked questions
Why does my city show up in multiple states?
Many city names are shared across states — there are 34 places named "Springfield" in the US alone. Type the state abbreviation or name alongside the city to get the right result.
What is a county-equivalent?
Louisiana uses "parishes" instead of counties. Alaska uses "boroughs" and "census areas." Washington D.C. is a federal district. Virginia has independent cities not part of any county. This tool labels all of them correctly.
Why do I need a county for a form?
Many US legal and government documents — property deeds, marriage licences, probate filings, court documents, tax assessor forms, voter registration, and more — require the county name because jurisdiction and record-keeping in the US is organised at county level.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The city-to-county database is built into this page. Everything runs offline in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
