Frequently asked questions

What is NANP?

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is the telephone numbering system shared by the US, Canada, and several Caribbean nations. It uses 3-digit Numbering Plan Area (NPA) codes — what everyone calls area codes — followed by a 7-digit local number.

Can a state have more than one area code?

Yes. As populations grew and mobile phones became ubiquitous, new area codes were added through splits (dividing a region) and overlays (adding a second code to the same geographic area). California alone has over 30 area codes.

What are toll-free area codes?

Numbers beginning with 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 are toll-free — the receiving party pays the call cost. They are not tied to any geographic location and are used nationwide by businesses and services.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The entire area code database is embedded in this page and the lookup runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
