About

Each month every debt is charged interest, you pay the minimum on all of them, and anything left (your extra, plus the freed-up payments from debts already cleared) goes to one focus debt. Avalanche focuses on the highest rate to save the most interest; snowball focuses on the smallest balance for faster wins. This is general information, not financial advice.

How to use Debt Payoff Planner

  1. Add your file

Drop your JSON file onto the upload area, or tap the area to choose it from your device.

  2. Set the options

Choose Debt name, Debt type, Balance, Interest rate, percent APR, Minimum payment per month and Extra payment / month. Every setting is on screen before you add a file, so you can see what the tool will do before it runs.

  3. Run it and save

Press Avalanche (least interest). The button stays disabled until there is something to work on, and each file shows its own progress and result. Press Export backup. Each finished file keeps a name based on the one you started with, so you can tell the versions apart.

What this tool does

Snowball and avalanche strategies

Avalanche clears the highest rate first and costs least in interest. Snowball clears the smallest balance first and pays a debt off sooner. Both are shown.

Extra payment modelling

Extra payment per month goes entirely to the target debt once the minimums are covered, which is why a small increase moves the debt-free date so much.

Debt-free date and total interest

The result gives the month you are debt free and the total interest you will have paid getting there.

Payoff order per debt

Each debt is listed in the order it gets cleared under the strategy you picked, so you always know what you are attacking next.

Balance chart

A chart shows the balances falling month by month, which makes the difference between the two strategies obvious at a glance.

Export and import JSON backup

Export backup writes a JSON file of every debt and Import backup restores it, so nothing is lost if you clear your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between snowball and avalanche?

Snowball clears the smallest balance first, which pays off a debt sooner and keeps momentum. Avalanche clears the highest interest rate first, which costs less in total interest. The planner shows both so you can see the difference in months and money.

How much difference does an extra payment make?

Usually a large one. Extra money goes entirely to the target debt after the minimums are paid, so it comes straight off the principal. Change the extra amount and the debt-free date and total interest update immediately.

Does it handle credit cards and loans together?

Yes. Add each debt with its balance, interest rate and minimum payment. Cards and fixed-term loans are both modelled month by month, and the payoff order is shown per debt.

Are my debt figures sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in this browser and saved only on this device. Use Export backup to keep a copy or move it to another device.

Why does my real balance differ slightly?

Lenders apply interest daily and on their own billing dates, while this planner compounds monthly. Expect a small difference in the final months rather than in the overall picture.
